A project I made for Noren Playing Cards by Deckita (ig: deckitadecks)
I really like the concept and the work done for this deck, I decided to do some renders with it.
Also I already wanted to make some 3d japanese calligraphy assets, so this deck gave me the right motivation.
This deck represents japanese traditional art and culture.
First Image:
The back design represents Noren, strips of traditional Japanese fabric that are hung on doorways, between rooms, or in windows, mostly used for advertising but also protection from sun, wind and rain and they are decoreted with Japanese Calligraphy, called Shodō, done by an experienced Japanese Calligrapher, Irekoma Kazuyo (いれこまかずよ).
This render is dedicated to Shodō, Japanese calligraphy.
I modelled every object in the scene, brush and brush holder, inkstick and inkstone, felt mat, paper and paperweight.
I little fun fact, on the inkstick there is the Deckita logo, a cat, so I found an image of this cute brush holder of a cat stretching and I thought it would be nice to model it and use it in the scene.
Second Image:
The Noren box design is a homage to the rich artistic heritage of 18th-century Japan, the Edo period, using textures sampled from original 18th Century documents of Japanese art by Nishikawa Sukenobu.
Some time ago I found this nice 3d model of a concrete cat statue and I was waiting for chance to use it in a project, then I found this deck and I thought it was the perfect opportunity.
So, with this model in mind I thought about an environment, a japanese shrine lost somewhere in a forest, I put the boxes on mossy concrete tiles and some fallen leaves to fill the scene. As a final touch an hdri and a spot light with noise to make a gobo light that simulates light going through forest trees.
Third Image:
With this third image I wanted to show the design of the four Aces, they have Shodō writings and hanko stamps, this last item is the theme of the render.
For personal use, there are at least four kinds of Hanko seals, for example officially registered seals, a seal used specifically for banking or one used for signing for postal deliveries and also a seal used by graphic artists to both decorate and sign their work, frequently pen names or nicknames, like the one I use in my renders.
The standard colour of the seal paste used to make the impression is vermilion red and it is kept covered after it has been used, in its original container, plastic or ceramic.
I modelled every object in the scene and I used once again the Deckita cat logo to make an hanko stamp.
I hope you like this project as much as I do.
